Performed on the professional-sized stage at Holyrood Academy, The Music Man was an outstanding success. The production received 11 nominations in the Somerset Fellow of Drama David Beech Awards in both performing and technical areas and won Best Sound for our sound engineer, Brian Eastell. It was also nominated for a number of NODA awards.
I did enjoy this production and would like to send my heartiest
congratulations to all cast members, production team, crew and
helpers on a performance that was as fresh as if I was seeing it
for the first time. Bravo!
Full marks to your fine troupe of Principals, all of whom were in
the correct age bracket, which is something of a rarity and all
were able to portray their respective characters with conviction:
Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd gave a bravura performance, both physically
and emotionally, with excellent voice and body language, bringing
to life this multi-faceted character. I hope his energy levels are
sustained throughout the run !
Richard Dauntless was effortlessly played in an attractive,
nautical way, which brought much light relief to proceedings. A
well maintained accent added to our enjoyment.
Sir Despard Murgatroyd created the villain of the piece easily,
bringing Victorian melodrama into the opera with good voice and
movement and was admirably partnered by:
Mad Margaret, who was deliciously fey and a little bit wild ! I
loved their Act 2 routines "I once was a very abandoned person"
followed by the highlight number, with Sir Ruthven "My eyes are
fully open". Well done!
Rose Maybud was charmingly played and sung and how delightful she
looked ! I am sorry I am unable to comment on both girls playing
the role, but feel sure Jen was no less charming than our Silvey !
Pefectly matched to Robin !
I have the highest praise for the two stalwarts Dame Hannah & Sir
Roderic Murgatroyd, playing their respective roles in the true
Savoyard tradition. Wonderful voices and presentation made the
performances so memorable. Bravo !
Old Adam Goodheart added his weight to the fine performances with
pleasant voice and delivery and a certain sense of melodrama in his
memorable opening of Act 2.
The delightful troupe of Professional Bridesmaids, Ghosts,
appearing spectacularly from their respective frames and hiding
places, Bucks and Villagers all entered into the fun of this lovely
opera, bringing the vocal numbers memorably to life and enhancing
them with occasional charming dance movement. Singing was
accompanied effectively by your splendid seven-piece Orchestra,
never masking the soloists. The whole production was attractively
dressed, with pretty bridesmaids, charming, rustic villagers,
dashing bucks and most impressive ancestors. Which brings me
finally to your two fine sets and many congratulations on their
design and construction, with complementary lighting and effects. I
particularly enjoyed the organ playing, and smoke in Act 2 and the
ingenious use of your limited stage area.
Thank you for inviting Denis and me to your production, which was
thoroughly enjoyed and special thanks to Ros who entertained us so
well before the performance. It was good to be able to talk to many
members afterwards.
With kind regards,
Gerry.
